Objectives and Innovative Aspects
What are the specific objectives of the project and what are the instruments used to achieve them?:
A major obstacle to solving the problems of unemployment and poverty amongst youths of rural areas include lack of information, professional training, lack of initiative, etc. In the Belo area, the problem of youth unemployment is made acute by the fact that most of these youths are orphans and street children. They lack people to help them start a business or learn trades that will help them take care of themselves. These youths involve themselves in criminal activities just to have something to eat (Bamenda Police archives). One of such crimes in neighbouring Bamenda is the involvement of youths in internet scamming (fraudwatchers.org). This has made many of them to be convicted and detained (postnewsonline.com) ICT helps these youths gain employment in industries, companies and enterprises as secretaries, net phone managers, cyber managers; but also increase their awareness of issues, problems and crises in other parts of the world. By surfing on the internet, they have better access to health care, local e-commerce and improve professionally and academically without travelling out of their locality. Research, communication skills, negotiation skills, self esteem and goal setting skills are developed. These are necessary skills to help start a living and continue education which are not taught in schools.

Background Information
Barriers and Solutions (max. 1000 characters):
Lack of computer equipment at the start, lack of funds to pay quality teachers, and trying to convince the youths about the importance of ICT training were major problems at the beginning. Through partnership with Helps International, Informatik Afrik, Switzerland, Catalyst Exhibits Company USA and some individuals, we had computer equipment. We used the schools and public forums to sensitize on the importance of receiving computer training.
Future plans and wish list (max. 750 characters):
- Creating more computer training centres in remote villages especially where there is no electricity at all - . Creating more computer labs in schools and colleges in rural communities. - Helping every youth have some basic computer knowledge so as to maximize their potentials for employment - Secure availability to internet in the computer centres We need laptops, PCs, internet equipment and funds to bring this to reality.
