THE PROJECT ENHANCED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS OF COMPUTER AND AWARENESS ON SOCIAL ISSUES

Sommario:

I SURVEYED TEH YOUTH IN THE AREA , I FELT THAT THERE IS NEED TO START A PROGRAM FOR YOUTH IN THE AREA FOR MAKING THEM EFFECTIVE CITIZENS OF SOCIETY . THE IDEA WAS DEVELOPED BY ME AND I SHARED WITH THE ORGANIZATION AND I DREW THE INITIAL PROJECT ACTIVITIES AND GOALS AND THAN ORGANIZATION APPROACHED TO A DONOR FOR SEED GRANT TO IMPLEMENT THIS PROJECT IN ACTION AND I MANAGED PROJECT ACTIVITIES SUCCESSFULLY. THE PROJECT STRENGTHENING YOUTH RESOURCE CENTER WAS 7 MONTHS LONG THE PROJECT UNDERTAKEN FROM OCTOBER 2007 TO APRIL 2008 IN HYDERABAD DISTRICT OF SINDH PROVINCE OF PAKISTAN GOAL WAS TO MAKE YOUTH SKILLFUL, TRAINED AND AWARE ON COMPUTER, LIFE SKILLS AND OTHER SOCIAL PROBLEMS OF THE CHANDIO GOTH [VILLAGE] AND ADJACENT UNPRIVILEGED SLUM AREAS OF QASIMABAD HYDERABAD SINDH PROVINCE PAKISTAN
THIS WAS AN INNOVATIVE PROGRAM AND HAD BEEN PREPARED BY YOUTH AND WAS COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY.

o 31 YOUTH ARE EDUCATED ON RH PROBLEMS AND HIV/AIDS AND ARE TRANSFERRING ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE TO OTHER FRIENDS

Project was implemented in Chandio Goth is located in Taluka Qasimabad of Hyderabad District, is a slum area. Most of the population is living with low socio-economic status and belongs poor class Youth of the area are the vulnerable group and near to risk of social evils. Keeping this situation in mind Sindh Community Foundation through its Youth Development Program intervened in the area and mobilized and organized them into groups in these meetings following problems were identified by the youth:
o Youth are fewer computers skilled and have no access to computer technology due to high fees structure
o Youth are engaged in social evils and involved in drug addictions
o Youth are less aware of social problems and also HIV/AIDS and RH
o Unavailability of recreational and education environment for youth
o Youth are less self confident and skillful
o Youth are not prepared for combating the modern and future challenges of globalization and poverty
This was an innovative program and had been prepared by youth and was completed successfully.

To achieve the set targets following strategies were applied and adopt for smoothly implementing of project :

o Resource pool of trained and well aware youth

Challenges/ Lessons learn
o Process of youth group formation in 04 new areas, was the hard task so; interest of youth was attracted through involving local contacts of the area.
o Cultural and games events are must to be arranged for attracting the interest of youth towards social activism.
o Financial support of the poor youth in archiving their educational goal is necessary to be given in the form of examination fee, monthly fee, purchasing of dress, and books specially to girls
o Sustainability of computer center is a challenge because it does not earn sufficient income to sustain, organization has contacted different local philanthropists and donors to equip computer center with modern equipments and advance course so the computer center will attract the other youth of the area.
o Due to unavailability of female instructor only few girls could get computer education, others did not get admission due to gender constraints and social values of the area.

Such project had never been implemented in the area , it was integrated was addressing the key problems of youth in the area , it developed capacity of young people on various social issues to promotion social activism through groups formation and training , to provided low cost computer education , it provided platform to youth to be gathered at a unit place to discuss their expressions and getting counseling , library facilities at Youth Resource Center . The idea of Youth Resource Center is also innovative.

10. Risultati

Describe the results of your project as per today:

o Giving regular services of training, awareness, carrier counseling and planning with library facilities facilitated 758 male female youth of Chandio Goth and adjacent underprivileged slums areas by Youth Resource Center
o 04 more Youth groups are formed and engaged into the local level social activities and are well equipped and sensitized on the social issues/ problems and their role in social change process
o 30 Poor youth are equipped with basic computer skills and are able to operate MS word, Excel and PowerPoint and paint programs
o 31 youth are educated on RH problems and HIV/AIDS and are transferring acquired knowledge to other friends
o Youth are gathering at a united platform of Youth Resource Center and YRC been recognized as innovative center of the development of youth in the area.

The social education is being provided through monthly youth forums with youth and counseling for higher education and carrier planning s a part of education is being provided to the young male female students. Mr. Javed Hussain is trained on Carrier counseling, so provided his expertise in this regards so young people form different areas coming to the YRC to get job and carrier counseling. Monthly 3 days are allocated for counseling sessions. For the youth trainings youth capacity building program ahs been improved in its areas of subjects /issues previously in 1st Capacity Building Program it was comprised on 6 trainings and now has been increased on : 11 areas: Confidence Building : Carrier Planning , Human rights , Gender Equality, Life skills, HIV/AIDS and RH, Environmental awareness, Democracy and Good Governance , Globalization , Peace and Human security, Leadership skills . for that purpose the quality of trainings ahs been increased the training material is being developed on each area and experts and training are being approached to conduct training in effective and standard manner . Previous there was poor food and logistic arrangement die to lacking of funds , but now e are generating local funds for arranging trainings equipped with and appropriate logistics and food arrangement , pleasure an flexible training environment.

The professionals are invited to partcitat and conduct forums and trainings for youth and this is opened for all professionals and youth as well. Youth and professional are welcomed to utilize the YRC for trainings and research purpose on youth issues. Youth are invited to participate the counselling sessions , trainings and monthly forums

The Proposed project has promote the ICT for education as well ah pre requisite for jobs as economic development in society and 6 younger from the computer center got jobs in private companies as Computer operational and getting monthly RS.5,000 and contributing and supporting their families economy.
The 3 students have got various project of web designing for NGOs and private firms. The students also highlighted culture through designing of pictures of the cultural sites of Sindh province in coral draw, adobe Photoshop. The rest of students have continued ICT as education in future as a carries in ICT sector, So this project ahs left multiple impacts of cultural and education promotion through ICT.

The Moomal Development Organization of Tando Muhammad Khan a small town and district head quarter visited the Youth Resource Center and inspired form its model and initiated Girls Youth Resource Center in the Ando Mohammed Khan.

• Effective and continuous mobilization of local peoples/ parents interaction is must to be carried out
• Sustainability of the YRC should be managed through generating the local funds , through mobilizing and educating Corporate sectors and local philanthropists

Background:

I surveyed the youthimy area , I felt that there is need to start a program for youth in the area For Making Them Effective Citizens Of Society . The idea was developed by me nd I shared with the organization and I drew the initial project activities and goals and than organization approached to a donor for seed grant to implement this project in action and I managed project activities successfully.Project Was implemented in Chandio Goth is located in Taluka Qasimabad of Hyderabad District, is a slum area. Future plans and wish list:

o Sufficient funds are required for making computer center well quipped with a advance courses and computer accessories and trained male, female computer instructors
o Well-equipped library structure is required in order to improve the maximum utilization of library facilities at YRC by both boys and girls of the area.
o This model can be replicated in rural districts
o Volume of youth engagement needs to be increased through arranging seminar, youth assemblies, and youth conferences, dialogues on various social local, regional and global issues and games and culture events need to be organized.
o Opportunities of exchanging the ideas and expression of youth on social issues need to be improved through study tours, exposure visits to different model of youth development and youth engagement in social change process.
o Youth Newsletter is must to be published in which youth may share their ideas and expression on various social issues ranging from RH, HIV/AIDS to democracy, human rights and environment issues in regional and global contexts
