Europe

The 3 C's (The Euro in us: a cultural and historical approach)

The 3 C's represent the initial letters for: Currency, Coins and Culture. What is the relationship among these three words?

1. Sommario progetto
Sommario:

What does the title "The 3 C's" stand for? The 3 C's represent the initial letters for: Coins, Currency and Culture. What is the relationship among these three words? Currency and coins have a close relationship. They refer directly to economic or monetary issues. But what about Culture? Someone would wonder: "what educational value could have a series of coins or banknotes?" The European currency (€, Euro) is something common to most of us who are part of the European Union. Being so, the illustrations in the notes and coins have a cultural, historical and geographical background which, thus, have an enormous educational potential. From these everyday objects we can imagine and develop different projects. Students will get to know not only the history and culture of the partner's country but also share identities and understand diversity,"building bridges" between them. We feel that the Euro € entry in our lives brought anxiety and different reactions. Positive and negative, especially from the adults' side. But, here we'll try to do a cultural approach... Especially, in the middle of the global economic crisis in the bank and stock market field, this issue has become modern and catchy!!!

Please explain the targets and the background of your project:

Objectives Generally, the aims of the project are: to make students aware of some European aspects, to enlarge their knowledge as far as the common currency is concerned, to develop their English and I.C.T. skills, to exchange ideas and experiences and to promote respect and tolerance amongst different cultures.

Come, e con quali mezzi cerca di raggiungere gli obiettivi prefissati:

Students will start by researching the European coins and banknotes of the partner's country. Then, they will produce a work on the history and culture of the other country, as well as share opinions on the similarities and differences in each other's living habits and beliefs. As regards the pedagogical approach, we followed the project-method development and its phases.

Quali opportunità/problemi affronta:

Our project has close relationship with European active citizenship, European Culture, European Union and new opportunities in education. The new era which the € Euro currency opened has a great interest. It is very challenging as regards the way the Europeans will react in the future.

Please explain what is unique or special in your project:

Although our project reminds coins or monetary issues, something which is far from our students' psychology, we try to take advantage of its European dimension and talk about culture, history, geography, European Union, active citizenship and our everyday lives. Especially, in the middle of the global economic crisis in the bank and stock market field, this issue has become modern and catchy!!! So this feature makes our project unique and innovative.

Our project becomes more amusing and educational as our students present their own interactive board game in both digital and printable version. So anyone can take advantage of it, even if they are not logged on the internet!!! You can find it in the attachments at the end of this page. Just unzip the attached folder with the name "game" and run the "euro1.htm" file. You can also download the zipped folder with the name "Euro Game". It is our printable version. Good luck and have fun!!!

Describe the results of your project as per today:

After our activities our pupils will have: ◊ Learned to work in groups and understand that teamwork is more effective, as they develop communication skills and sociability. ◊ Improved their I.C.T. and English skills and performance. At the end of the project, we hope our students feel motivated to continue exchanging ideas with each other. Moreover, we expect that they will have learned to understand and respect the others' opinion and values.

In che misura risponde ai bisogni degli utenti:

Users can take advantage of a new and modern approach on European Union issues such as active citizenship. We also present amusing and interesting online games and exercises made by our students.

Quanti utenti interagiscono con il progetto mensilmente e in quale modo:

This school year (2008-2009) my greek class interacted with a portuguese class. During this collaboration they exchanged information and experience about their everyday lives, their schools, their countries and talked about modern issues. We used the E-twinning platform an absolutely safe social networking place -free of charge- offered by the European School Network. This made our work and our collaboration easy and very productive. We also communicated each other via e-mail, the chat service of our platform. The Web 2.0 tools helped us so much!!! We created a protected work space http://twinspace.etwinning.net/launcher.cfm?lang=en&cid=33107 and uploaded our work there. Later on we builted a new web site http://dim-karat.ilei.sch.gr/euro/euro.html where we announced our working results. Of course many other users can visit our separate web site and tell us their opinion and do their proposals!!!

Descrivete in quale modo il progetto contribuisce a migliorare l'educazione e la formazione dei giovani:

Our pupils found this project amusing and informative, as they learned new things about culture, economy, geography, using ICT tools. They also improved their computer and English skills. Some of them (the team leaders) had no problem, as they have a PC at their home. The others had a few problems (at the start) with the keyboard or how to search the internet and find the suitable sources. The more they practiced, the more they succeeded . At the end of the project they estimated the role of working in teams and its great value. They also realized the new role of Web 2.0 and what the potential of social networking is.

Descrivete in quale modo il progetto ha ottimizzato la partecipazione di professionisti, ragazzi, giovani o altri soggetti:

Our teams consist of students coming from different countries and reflecting a socioeconomic and cultural variety. So, pupils from a Greek rural school communicate with an urban Portuguese college -via internet- and exchange information about their school life, their hobbies, their customs, their opinions and reactions about Euro €, our new common currency. During this process, our students realize that their lives look quite the same as they are citizens not only of the European Union, but of a universal community, as well. The globality of the mass media and the new technologies (I.C.T.) educate "digital literated" people who share or promote their experience, learn about others on the planet and try to understand other peoples' individuality and diversity. At the same time, they try to preserve their native and special habits, attributes and identities.

This project produces only positive outcomes. Anyone can take advantage of our material, our online excercises and online games. Moreover they can meet a new perspective of Europe and broaden their mind.

13. Informazioni aggiuntive
Background:

Christos (a greek primary school teacher) met Margarida (an English teacher) in Amsterdam, during a Comenius I.C.T. seminar and from the very first time we agreed on many things about our job. So i persuaded her to undertake with me this nice teamwork. I helped especially with the difficult software in order to support the web-site building.

Ostacoli:

Margarida worked with 3 teams in Portugal, while Christos did the same with two teams in Greece. One of our first difficulty was the fact that Margarida had only one hour available for activities, while Christos could spend more than 3 hours per week, as the curriculum there allows 3-4 hours for cross-curricular and cross-thematic projects. The time difference was not a real problem as we could upload our scheduled tasks on the E-twinning platform (an absolutely safe social networking place -free of charge- offered by the European School Network.

Soluzioni:

A solution to our first problem was to make a work plan from the beginning and follow it "to the letter". So we knew what we had to do, without sparing our time. As regards the teams, Christos gave the opportunity to George, Theoni and Anna to be the leaders, as they are very good in ICT field and could handle computers skillfully. They also helped their partners to overcome the initial problems with the keyboard (how to find the letters and pointing), the search engines and the software (Ms-Word and PowerPoint). Later they offered their place to the others in order to have their own experience with the PC. All of them collaborated and gave ideas about what to search and how to do it, about the context, the material, the quiz questions, how to construct their board game. Anna had the idea and draw the background for the Euro Currency Game!!! Of course Christos helped with the difficult software (Macromedia Flash 8 and FrontPage) in order to support the whole project. He also gave great help to Margarida in technical issues on PhotoShop 6.As regards our group's structure, we tried to achieve team diversity. So we included pupils (boys and girls) with communication, I.C.T. skills and of course with different capabilities and talents!!! Everybody in the team presented his opinion and all together contributed to our website's context, material and structure.

Future plans and wish list:

Our future plan is to broaden our project, involving more schools or classes from all over Europe and share again our experience and ideas. This will make our project more effective and representable. The new technologies ICT, the Web 2.0 tools and their convenience will help us to make it true.

Sustainable European Citizenship

We are a French high school working with Finnish, German and Spanish partners on the internet to collaborate on environmental issues and sustainability, educate our students as to green ethical liv

1. Sommario progetto
Sommario:

Sustainable European Citizenship ( SEC) is a partnership of four secondary schools in Germany, Finland, France and Spain, focussing on climate change and the young people’s ideas on the means of alleviating its present and future consequences.
After a calculation of the ecological footprint, each school will focus on the most crucial local issues: Spain on water availability, Germany on air pollution, France on the protection of  sea sites and Finland on sustainable forestry. All findings are to be published and exchanged on a common website. Eventually, a guide to « Sustainable European Citizenship » and a glossary will be published in the four languages involved and printed on recycled paper.

Gymnasium Himmelsthür, the coordinating school, will host the first exchange in autumn 2008.
The work at school will be done according to the respective curricula. Some 30 students per school are actively involved in the exchanges and all schools will share the procedures and results. The local communities are both bases for the practical work and actors for disseminating the ideas resulting from the programme.
Sustainable European Citizenship comprises a two year-round work , regular on line contacts and four exchange visits to each school and area with pupils.
"Together we can do more!" is our motto and our emblem is the greylag goose as it flies over our 4 countries along its migratory route.
I am at the origin of the project as I found our Finnish partner on e twinning, he had already worked with the German partner and later found the Spanish colleagues, we had the same idea of working on environmental education using digital tools. Here is a summary of our exchange visit as we hosted our partners last May,
http://www.lyc-cordouan.ac-poitiers.fr/anglais/spip.php?rubrique94
our project is to end in September 2010 with the publication of our multilingual brochure prepared on the wiki during these 2 years.

WE USE THE HTTP://ISSUU.COM SERVER TO PUT THE MAGAZINE ONLINE AND THIS WAS ONE OF THE MAIN POSITIVE ASPECTS OF THE PARTNERSHIP AS WE DO NOT HAVE TO PRINT THE MAGAZINE AND SO WE ARE LOOKING AFTER OUR NATURE AND PLANET.
EVERY MONTH THERE WAS A SPECIFIC TOPIC AND ALL THE SCHOOLS WROTE ABOUT IT, BOTH IN THEIR MOTHER LANGUAGES AND IN ENGLISH: IN DECEMBER WE WROTE ABOUT OUR CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS, IN JANUARY WE WROTE ABOUT OUR SCHOOLS, IN FEBRUARY OUR TOWNS, IN MARCH OUR NATIONAL SYMBOLS, IN APRIL WE WROTE ABOUT EASTER, IN MAY OUR PAST PRESENT HEROES, AND IN JUNE WE ARE WRITING ABOUT A NATIONAL TOURISTIC GUIDE.
I HAVE TO SAY THAT ALL THE PUPILS HAVE LEARNT A LOT ABOUT USING ICT IN THEIR LIVES, AS WELL AS RECOGNIZING THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE NATIVES OF OTHER EUROPEAN COUNTRIES AND UNDERSTANDING THAT WE ALL HAVE TO SHARE THIS CONTINENT AS UNITED AND RESPONSIBLE.

Please explain the targets and the background of your project:

THE MAIN TARGETS WERE USING ICT AND A FOREIGN LANGUAGE AS TOOLS FOR COMMUNICATION AND GETTING TO KNOW THE TRADITIONS, CUSTOMS AND WAYS OF LIVING OF OTHER EUROPEAN COUNTRIES. WE USED TWO PLATFORMS: THE ETWINNING PORTAL AND ISSUU.

Come, e con quali mezzi cerca di raggiungere gli obiettivi prefissati:

THIS PROJECT AIMS GETTING PEOPLE TOGETHER WITHIN EUROPE BY WRITING ABOUT WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT AND WHAT MAKES US EQUAL IN EUROPE.

Quali opportunità/problemi affronta:

WE ARE NOW 27 COUNTRIES IN EUROPE AND THE MAJORITY OF THE YOUNG PEOPLE NOWADAYS DO NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT THOSE WHO LIVE IN THIS CONTINENT. SO, THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO GET IN TOUCH WITH OUR PARTNERS AND MAKE FRIENDS THAT MAY LAST FOREVER, BRINGING PEACE TO EUROPE AND TO THE WORLD.

Please explain what is unique or special in your project:

I FIND THIS PROJECT SPECIAL DUE TO THE NUMBER OF COUNTRIES THAT WERE WILLING TO TAKE PART IN IT. WE ALSO USE THE LATEST TECHNOLOGIES AVAILABLE ON THE INTERNET AS A MEANS OF PROTECTING NATURE. AT THE SAME TIME WE ARE ALL SHARING OUR MOTHER LANGUAGES AND LEARNING MORE ABOUT A FOREIGN LANGUAGE, IN THIS CASE THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE.

10. Risultati
Describe the results of your project as per today:

WE HAVE PUBLISHED 6 ONlINE MAGAZINES SINCE DECEMBER 2008.

In che misura risponde ai bisogni degli utenti:

ALL THE ARTICLES SENT TO ME ARE PUBLISHED AND WE FEEL BELONGING TO A GREAT GROUP OF TEACHERS AND PUPILS COMMITED IN CREATING WHAT WE SAID WE WOULD.

Quanti utenti interagiscono con il progetto mensilmente e in quale modo:

AS I SAID BEFORE THERE ARE 16 TEACHERS FROM 16 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES. THE NUMBER OF PUPILS VARIES BUT WE ALL WORK WITH A CLASS EVERY MONTH, SO THE AVERAGE OF PUPILS PER MONTH WILL PROBABLY BE 160.

Descrivete in quale modo il progetto contribuisce a migliorare l'educazione e la formazione dei giovani:

THIS PROJECT BROUGHT GREATER INTEREST IN LEARNING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE AS THE PUPILS KNOW THAT WHATEVER THEY WRITE WILL BE READ BY THOUSANDS OF ONLINE READERS IN THE WORLD. AS TEACHERS WE CAN INTEGRATE THIS PROJECT AS A TOOL FOR TEACHING PUPILS HOW TO LOOK FOR INFORMATION AND HOW TO WRITE IT IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THE MAIN OBJECTIVES.

Descrivete in quale modo il progetto ha ottimizzato la partecipazione di professionisti, ragazzi, giovani o altri soggetti:

AFTER SOME MONTHS OF HARD WORK WE FEEL OUR PUPILS MUCH MORE MOTIVATED TO LEARNING AND ALSO TO KNOWING FACTS ABOUT EUROPE.

Descrivete in quale modo il progetto favorisce l'uso delle nuove tecnologie da parte di professionisti, ragazzi e giovani per lo sviluppo culturale e didattico:

THIS PROJECT IS BASED ON ICT AS AN EDUCATIONAL TOOL FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING. IN PORTUGAL MANY TEACHERS WERE NOT USED TO WORKING WITH THESE NEW TECHNOLOGIES AND THEY FELT THAT THE PUPILS KNEW MORE THAN THEM. WITH THIS PROJECT THAT FEELING HAS CHANGED AND TEACHERS FEEL NOW MUCH MORE CONFORTBLE IN USING ICT IN THEIR CLASSES. CHILDREN ARE JUST LOVING BEING ABLE TO USING THOSE TOOLS THAT THEY WERE BORN WITH.

Descrivete i criteri che usate per misurate i risultati raggiunti dal vostro progetto:

THE USE OF ICT BY TEACHERS – VERY GOOD
THE USE OF ICT BY PUPILS – VERY GOOD
THE USE OF A FOREIGN LANGUAGE – VERY GOOD
THE SEARCH TECHNIQUE – VERY GOOD
COMMITMENT – VERY GOOD
RESULTS – VERY GOOD

Che cosa possono imparare altri soggetti dal vostro progetto:

I THINK THAT THERE ARE SOME LESSONS THAT MAY BE TAKEN FROM THIS PROJECT. FIRST, THAT IT IS WORTH TO TAKE CHANCES; SECOND, THAT WE MUST BE REALLY COMMITED IN TEACHING OUR PUPILS AND NEVER LET THEM DOWN; THIRD, IN ORDER TO LEARN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE PUPILS NEED TO FEEL THE NEED, AND GETTING THEM IN TOUCH WITH OTHER INHABITANTS THAT DO NOT SPEAK THEIR LANGUAGES IS ONE OF THE BEST WAYS.

13. Informazioni aggiuntive
Background:

THIS PROJECT WAS STARTED AS ONE MORE PROJECT ON ETWINNING THAT I’VE BEEN DEVELOPING SINCE 2006. I’VE ALWAYS TRIED TO BRING MY PUPILS REAL LIFE SITUATIONS OF USING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE AND ICT. THERE IS NO NEED OF FUNDING FOR ETWINNING PROJECTS, WE JUST HAVE TO REALLY BE UP TO IT AND KEEP ON WORKING. THE TEAM OF PARTNER SCHOOLS WAS A BIT DIFFICULT TO GET TOGETHER AS I WANTED MANY COUNTRIES TO BE ON THE PROJECT. AFTER TWO MONTHS OF HARD WORK I BROUGHT TOGETHER THESE

Ostacoli:

THERE WERE NO GREAT BARRIERS. I ONLY WISHED I COULD GET MORE PARTNERS.

Soluzioni:

I SENT MORE THAN 100 MESSAGES TO ALL THE POSSIBLE PARTNERS AND SELECTED THEM AS THEY ANSWERED ME.

Future plans and wish list:

THERE IS MUCH TO DO TO MAKE US FEEL EUROPEANS, TO BREAK BARRIERS AND TO BE TOLLERANT TO OTHERS. I WOULD LIKE THIS PROJECT TO CONTINUE AND DEVELOP AND THAT WE COULD NOW CREATE FRIENDSHIPS AND EXAMPLES OF TOLLERANCE AMONGST EVERYBODY.

1. Sommario progetto
Sommario:

The project is a continuation of the relationship between the primary school of Rionero vulture in the school and School Apoldu de Jos (Romania), "Liviu Rebreanu" School, Mioveni (Romania) "Liviu Rebreanu" School, Mioveni town, Arges county, Romania (Romania) with which we achieved in the past several other projects. Following an agreement made with the Romanian partners I've registered the project and invited other schools partners. During the project we have continuously communicate by MSN, and using the tools etwinning . In this way we established the various steps, organized the entire work, continuously exchanged our experiences, support each other
The project is based on the assumption that the natural and cultural heritage, are essential elements of our national and European identity. But you can not love and respect both of them if you don't know them enough. Pupils and teachers from different schools have done research and have revised the foreground making photos, videos, animations, slide, interactive learning games, questionnaires, surveys have inserted their products in twinspace of etwinning and published everything on the blog They also learned to communicate with its European partners using email, chat, video conferencing and through an international language. Curiosity and creativity are been continuously fed by many and different situations, intelligently selected by teachers to become love for nature and culture. On this trail have been addressed new problems that have relevance to the future of a more sustainable society in which culture and nature blend in accordance with the famous phrase of Edgard Morin"We need to inscribe in us an ecological conscience. The know our connection consubstantial with the biosphere leads us to abandon the dream Promethean of domain of the universe for found on the contrary, the aspiration to conviviality on Earth" The teachers have created a true virtual classroom where students were able to learn, create, test their skills and abilities

9. Obiettivi ed elementi di innovazione
Please explain the targets and the background of your project:

We are a small school in a north-eastern Romanian village trying to make our students acquainted with the modern technology and the whole Europe at the same time. My students' parents can hardly accept they do not have enough money for their kids to travel and find out about other European countries or get in contact with foreign people. Most of my students have never visited the capital of Romania and a good number of them have never been to the closest city to me. By means of the blog that we created in collaboration with other 20 schools in Europe, students can improve their English, can learn to use the internet and different online programs and have direct access to Europe.

Come, e con quali mezzi cerca di raggiungere gli obiettivi prefissati:

The aims of our projects are the following: - To establish contacts between students and teachers from different countries; - To improve students' English by means of online communication; - To raise awareness of the traditions and customs that exist in different countries by posting materials created by our students; - To use modern technologies in communication and learning by accessing them as often as possible both at school and at home; - To raise awareness of a Europe united in diversity through concrete experience, discussing and finding similarities and differences between different traditions in Europe

Quali opportunità/problemi affronta:

The main problem the project addresses is the lack of direct contact with other European countries that the vast majority of my students used to deal with. They are less-advantaged students firstly because they live in an isolated village and secondly because their parents cannot afford to offer him the opportunity to have contact or to see other countries or foreign people. We are part of the EU, but, unfortunately, our kids had never seen Europe and had never met an European person before this project started.

Please explain what is unique or special in your project:

It is unique because it is an online archive of European traditions, made by teachers and students, commented and discussed almost every day. It becomes bigger and bigger every day and celebrates the unique heritage European countries and peoples got from their ancestors. All the materials are original, made by students and teachers and the experience they write about on the blog is direct and fresh.

10. Risultati
Describe the results of your project as per today:

Among the results we can mention: - our students can use the internet and online programs to write to and communicate with foreign students; - we have quite a big archive of all the traditions in 14 European countries; - our students have improved their level of English; - our students have access to what we call "European mentality", which is what we need in order to go on as a people; - our teachers have learnt how to use different modern technologies in their lessons

In che misura risponde ai bisogni degli utenti:

The blog has offered the best virtual classroom where students and teachers from different countries have exchanged opinions and shown their ability to communicate and convey messages about their traditions.

Quanti utenti interagiscono con il progetto mensilmente e in quale modo:

Almost 300 students and teachers in the countries involved in the project interact with our project per month. Their favourite form of interaction is through postings and comments on the blog. Also, internauts from all over the world have visited our blog. At the end of April 2009, we had 44,374 hits on the blog and lots of comments from people all over the world.

Descrivete in quale modo il progetto contribuisce a migliorare l'educazione e la formazione dei giovani:

The project was a revolutionary one for our school and the first of this kind in the region. Both our students and their parents are proud of this achievement and the teachers have noticed that their students are much more interested in using new technologies in the classroom, they know more about the EU countries and manifest a high interest in foreign languages.

Descrivete in quale modo il progetto ha ottimizzato la partecipazione di professionisti, ragazzi, giovani o altri soggetti:

It encouraged them to use foreign languages, ICT and made them proud of being Romanian and European at the same time. Also, they acquired information and direct experience in dealing with foreign people and in the future this experience will be of use to them for their jobs and/or projects.

Descrivete in quale modo il progetto favorisce l'uso delle nuove tecnologie da parte di professionisti, ragazzi e giovani per lo sviluppo culturale e didattico:

The main tool used in the project is a blog and in order to be able to post on it one needs to learn about certain other tools and programs. Everybody in the school knows now what a blog is, what online communication is, how to communicate instantly and how to post a material online.

Descrivete i criteri che usate per misurate i risultati raggiunti dal vostro progetto:

By the impact on the local community. By the hits on the blog. By the interest of the students in ICT and foreign languages. By the acnowledgements we received at national and European level.

We used the experience on this project for a Comenius project on traditions that we will be doing in our school in 2008-2010.

A French teacher asked for our help online to do a similar blog, but focusing on the Mediterranean heritage of the countries in that area.

An Italian teacher who collaborates with us brought an English school partner in the project and they started presenting their own traditions and customs, doing the work that we did and do on the blog and in our school.

Che cosa possono imparare altri soggetti dal vostro progetto:

Communication is everything! We can preserve our traditions by means of the new technologies.

Respect diversity!

Bucuresti-Romania (Irina Vasilescu) Üzümlü Şehit Mehmet Primary School Beysehir, KONYA - Turkey (Nihan Kandiş) Individual contributors Dragos Apostu (Romania), www.dragosescu.com

Ostacoli:

Being the first online project implemented in the region, there were people who didn't really think it could lead to such good communication and collaboration.

Soluzioni:

We kept promoting the project and the online tools that we used pointing out that the blog is a means of communication just like phones or letters.

Future plans and wish list:

We want our students and teachers who have worked in the project to meet for at least 2-3 days and for that we need financial support.
